About Workshop

Engineering Development Board (EDB) is working under the Ministry of Industries, Production & Special Initiatives and entrusted with the responsibilities of the development of engineering sector of Pakistan and connecting it to the global markets. EDB firmly believes that for a globally competitive engineering industry a sound and competitive steel sector is the pre-requisite.

The main focus of EDB is to put up steel mills in the country which are mainly based on indigenous iron ore. Most of the iron ore deposits available in Pakistan are with low Fe content (32%) and are not being utilized for iron making due to high level of silica, aluminium etc.

it has been learnt that M/s Tyazhpromexport – Russia has developed new technology ‘Romelt' which uses lean iron ore (with Fe content not less than 30%) for iron production. The process has since been licensed to various companies in USA , Japan , India etc. EDB has organized this workshop to expose our local industrialists/investors to this technology and explore possibilities of producing steel through ROMELT process based on local raw material in a cost effective manner.

Board of Governors appreciated one and a half year performance of EDB. Currently 1500 foundries are operating in the country – CEO addressed the International Foundry Conference. During the International Foundry Conference CEO emphasized on the importance of internships/trainings for students.Five years tariff plan given in AIDP will help the Industry to make long term investment – CEO addressed the workshop on AIDP. EDB to take delegation to metal working show – EMO 2007 to Hannover in September 2007. Minister Jahangir Khan Tareen formed committee of OVMs & EDB officials to solve differences on tariff given in AIDP. JICA advised Pakistan to focus on high value manufacturing. Pak Industrial sector grows at 10.9 percent during the first quarter of current financial year. MIDEST 2006 and Euromold 2006, the leading international trade shows opened new avenues for Pakistan’s engineering sector  Youth Business International Mentor’s Program of Prince Charles started its operations in Pakistan.
