Visit to China

A ten member delegation of the Steel Sector of Pakistan lead by Mr. S.M. Adil Shah , General Manager Engineering Development Board (EDB), Visited China from November 27-30, 2005 on the invitation of Metallurgical Construction Company (MCC),China.

The delegation included Mr. Mian Muhammad Javed Shafi, Chairman, Al-Shafi Steels (Pvt) Ltd., Mr. Mian Muhammad Abdullah Director Project DYNACORP (Pvt.) Ltd, Mr. Muhammad Tariq Iqbal Mughal Vice Chairman Mughal Steel, Mr. Abbas Akbar Ali Director Amreli Steels (Pvt) Ltd, Mr.Ilyas Aziz Malik Director FSL Group of Companies, Mr. Mirza Muhammad Yousaf Baig Chief Executive International Fabrication Company, Mr. Shakeel Ahmad General Manager Mughal Steel, Mr.Rao Rashid Manager Operations Peoples Steel Mills Karachi,Muhammad Ishaq Paracha Managing Partner Al-Hamza Shipbreaking Company

The main objective of the visit was to explore process/technologies for beneficiation of the local lean iron ores for production of iron. It may be noted that about 97 percent of the Chinese ore is having about 30 % iron content and is being successfully used for production of iron.

M/S MCC arranged a visit to Shi Tie Ying beneficiation plant which is under installation and commissioning,Bang Me Shang Beneficiation plant and Tangshane iron and steel plant.

The visit provided an opportunity to the delegates to acquire first hand knowledge of iron ore mining, beneficiation, smelting and steel making which will help them in making their future investment decisions.

Board of Governors appreciated one and a half year performance of EDB. Currently 1500 foundries are operating in the country – CEO addressed the International Foundry Conference. During the International Foundry Conference CEO emphasized on the importance of internships/trainings for students.Five years tariff plan given in AIDP will help the Industry to make long term investment – CEO addressed the workshop on AIDP. EDB to take delegation to metal working show – EMO 2007 to Hannover in September 2007. Minister Jahangir Khan Tareen formed committee of OVMs & EDB officials to solve differences on tariff given in AIDP. JICA advised Pakistan to focus on high value manufacturing. Pak Industrial sector grows at 10.9 percent during the first quarter of current financial year. MIDEST 2006 and Euromold 2006, the leading international trade shows opened new avenues for Pakistan’s engineering sector  Youth Business International Mentor’s Program of Prince Charles started its operations in Pakistan.
